Message of CCB to Customers: Use ATM Safely, Keep Alert for Fraud and Enjoy a Happy Holiday

Published time:2006-09-30

As a 24-hour self-service platform of banks, ATM allows customers to easily check their account, withdraw cash or make transfers. However, in recent years criminals also frequently use ATM for fraud or to steal customers’ money. As the National Day approaches, CCB reminds customers of keeping alert when using ATMs during the holiday.

To protect the interest of customers and provide them with a safe self-service environment, during the holiday CCB will take all possible measures and join hands with the public security authorities to fight against various criminal activities and ensure customers enjoy a happy holiday.

It is said that all the branches and sub-branches of CCB have formulated strict monitoring rules concerning the self-service equipments. Its staffs patrol the business hall where self-service equipments are installed on a daily basis, checking whether the ATMs operate normally and whether there are illegal placards. CCB Jiangsu branch opens the 95533 hotline at its self-service banks to solve customers’ problem, if any, in a timely manner and guard against those criminal activities committed via ATMs. Its Shenzhen, Guangdong, Liaoning, Beijing, Guangxi, Jiangsu and Hunan branches launch the “Fox Hunting” campaign against ATM, telephone bank and short message fraud. Various CCB branches also keep close contacts with local public security authorities to report clues of ATM fraud in a timely manner. CCB Fujian branch installs the long distance monitoring system on the ATMs within its jurisdiction, which not only serves as a deterrent to the criminals but also can provide evidence for the public security authorities in criminal case investigation.

Although CCB has taken various preventative measures, customers still need keep alert when using ATMs.

First, customers should know the ways in which the frauds commit crimes. According to CCB, such ways mainly include:

1. Criminals paste false information in the name of financial institutions such as banks and credit card organizations to lure the customers to make transfers and steal their money. For example, some criminals post false bank hotline and website on ATMs and block the cash exit areas. Customers are trapped to dial the wrong number or visit the fraudulent website when failing to draw money, thus disclosing their account information and password.

2. Criminals use such tools as hook, nipper, adhesive tape and false keyboard to steal customers’ bank card and money.

3. Criminals accost the customers who draw cash at ATMs and then manage to steal the customers’ card account information and password or exchange their bank cards with false ones.

Second, customers should keep high alert. In particular, those customers who go out during holidays should try to avoid using ATMs at night or in out-of-the-way places and keep high alert whenever using ATMs.

CCB sincerely reminds customers of calling 95533 which is the only hotline of CCB whenever finding any suspicious signs. Customers shall never dial any other phone number which is printed on some advertisement or notice to avoid being cheated. CCB wish all the customers a happy National Day holiday.
